True Confessions and New Mercies

  • For years my friend Susanne has hosted a weekly carnival at her blog, Friday’s Fave Five. I’ve thought about participating with a Friday’s Non-Fave Five where I list five of my biggest pet peeves.
  • Yes, I am in something of a snarky mood.
  • Among the non-faves I would list: that moment when I walk in a room and before I’ve been greeted, or sometimes as I am greeted, I get the “once-over,” you know, that obvious head to toe inspection? assessment of my wardrobe choice of the day? I don’t know what it is, but it grates. At least wait until I look away!
  • Speaking of wardrobe, a couple of months ago I cleared out my closet and reduced my clothes by at least half. It was exhilarating! I need to do it again. In the weeks since, I’ve only missed one article of clothing: a brown crew neck sweater.
  • I like to think I’m working toward a minimalist wardrobe but truthfully I’ve bought several things since the Great Closet Diminishment.
  • I suppose it’s a vicious cycle: give away, get more, give away, get more…
  • As I type, I’m wearing my favorite day-to-day outfit: jeans and a sweatshirt.
  • With such simplistic preferences, one would think a minimalist wardrobe would be easy to achieve and maintain and therefore no need for a Great Closet Expansion to follow so closely on the heels of the Great Closet Diminishment.
  • I guess not.
  • As I type this, wearing my favorite day-to-day outfit, it’s Thursday and speaking of Thursdays, the other night the boys and I watched an episode of The Cosby Show.
  • Speaking of The Cosby Show and Thursdays, was there a better night for television? The Cosby Show, A Different World, Cheers, L.A. Law…wait, what came on after Cheers? I can’t remember!
  • Speaking of L.A. Law and The Cosby Show, I used to dream of wearing power suits like Claire Huxtable and Grace Van Owen.
  • You could say my fashion goals have changed over the years.
  • As part of the Great Closet Diminishment, I may or may not have (finally) gotten rid of clothes I’ve had since the days of The Cosby Show and L.A. Law.
  • The reasons why we (I) keep various articles of clothing are pretty silly sometimes.
  • That’s all I’m going to say about that.
  • And did you catch I’m typing this on Thursday? Did you know that sometimes “today” in a blog post isn’t exactly today? And that sometimes the today at the start of the post isn’t today but the today at the end is?
  • Yes, believe it or not, it has taken me more than one day to write this non-post.
  • Another non-fave, pet peeve: late responses to emails.
  • Except it is a case of the pot and the kettle as I have become guilty of late responses to emails.
  • I actually told someone recently that if they wanted me to reply in a prompt manner it would be better to text.
  • I used to think texting was crazy. “Why not just pick up the phone and call?” I would wonder back in the days of my texting ignorance.
  • Now I love texting. Love.it.
  • Texting is an introvert’s dream form of communication: I can choose when to reply, brevity is a necessity, and no face-to-face conversation required.
  • I’m kidding. Sort of.
  • I had all sorts of intentions to blog more regularly upon the new year.
  • You can see how that’s gone for me.
  • In fact, I’m a little embarrassed to offer my true confessions after the blog has been dark for a week or more.
  • Don’t I have something more substantial to talk about than clothes and texting?
  • I guess not.
  • But, thanks be to God, today’s a new day, both for blogging and for new mercies. Yes and amen.

  1. Ha! There are so many relationships I’d ruin if I listed some of my pet peeves. I find those are best expressed in person with someone who loves you no matter what. 🙂
I’m noticing more and more that people do not respond to emails. I think they think they responded by just reading it…

  2. Excellent! Love the stream of conscious blogging bit!
And lately, my “power suits” in these freezing temps has been sweatpants, sports bra, and a sweatshirt. I’ve dubbed it my “housewife uniform.”
